What's wrong with technical specialists? Nothing.
What's wrong with how they're trained? Read on...
We're Alistair Gordon and Dominic Johnson, and we're coaches who've worked with economists, developers, engineers, scientists and other highly technical people for 10 years.
And each time we start a new coaching engagement, we see the evidence that technical specialists just aren't getting the broader coaching that they need.
Even the newest, most raw manager is coached to understand the commercials of their organisation. Or to engage stakeholders and pitch their ideas in terms of business goals, or to coach and mentor.
Managers get career ladders, appraisals, capability frameworks, career networks, and a ton of support. So as they become more senior, they're ready to solve the majority of the business challenges they will confront.
Technical specialists, meanwhile, are left to work it all out on their own.
The more senior they become, the more their challenges aren't just technical - they're broader business problems. And eventually, inevitably, specialists hit "the technical ceiling".
They're stuck.
Business skills are not hard to train.
They're not rocket science, especially to an actual rocket scientist.
But it's hard to find training that suits technical teams. Most business training coaches how manage people, when what technical specialists need is to achieve more with their expertise.
That's why we've spent three years writing Master Expert. It teaches the tools and techniques that business generalists, MBAs and entrepeneurs use to be successful. But it ONLY covers the skills actually needed by technical experts, explained in a manner and sequence that makes them easy to relate to the expert's job.
Real-life challenges
Every example in the book is a situation that has been faced by our real-life coaching cohort in their real-life technical roles.
We've worked hard to make the book hyper-relevant and useful.
There's hundreds of models, checklists, diagrams, action items and tools, but they're structured into short, practical chapters you can pick up and put down each time you're faced with a new challenge.
There's also a lot of tips for better day-to-day working, including how to maintain energy levels, and manage conflict, overload, priorities and delegation.
